Why is the battery life of a smartphone so poor?

What is happening to the advancements in battery technology. Isn't there a company producing far more efficient ones which can last at least a couple of days or more. Why is the battery life of a smartphone so poor?
there are 3 main reason os,hardware, screen size.mainly its only android phones which is having poor battery back up coz it heavy os on java platform, ios, rim and symbian belle devices have better battery backup due to efficient coding and lighter language like c++.
Smart phones tend to do many things all the time, so this can eat up battery life like nobody's business. Then when you use apps, some of them can eat up more battery.

There are things you can do to help matters, such as not having internet switched on 24/7, making sure there are no apps running unnecessarily in the background. But, battery is still not brilliant. It is a shame they don't last longer, but that is the way it is for the moment.

One day someone will come up with a solution, though! Why is the battery life of a smartphone so poor?
a large touchscreen is the main reason why. Even if u do all power saving options on ur phone, its the screen that has to be lit up, thats the main factor.
But u can buy smartphones with all the apps and features that have smaller screens and physical keyboards and they have exceptional battery life, like the qwerty e series nokias (e6, e5, e72, e71, e63, etc) and blackberry phones.
Buy a extended battery and not that cheap Chinese crap they sell on eBay.

These phones are more advance than your typical flip phone . They have apps, full html internet browser, Adobe flash, gigahertz processors etc etc...Why is the battery life of a smartphone so poor?
Smartphones are constantly checking for emails and messages from Apps so the wifi or 3g is in constant use. The batteries would not last long if they were the older technology.
buying a good quality extended battery can give you longer battery time.
Because of all the apps, they make it slower.
