What happens when the 2yr contract of a smartphone is finished, can they still charge u with data plan?

I have a 3g iphone with an expired 2 yr contract and wanted to keep using it without a data plan because its kind of slow and i realised i dont really use internet often...still AT%26amp;T wants to charge me with data plans...the phone is more than paid and i thought it belonged to me but the company behaves as if they still own the phone by forcing me to pay a monthly data plan...is that legal? What happens when the 2yr contract of a smartphone is finished, can they still charge u with data plan?
Er... it's perfectly legal. You have to have a data plan as long as you use the phone. The contract has nothing to do with the data plan. The contract just says you aren't going to cancel your phone plan or else you'll get hit with an early termination fee. A contract isn't a down payment for the phone if that's what you're thinking.

You ALWAYS have to have a data plan if you use a smartphone on AT%26amp;T... or really any US carrier. What happens when the 2yr contract of a smartphone is finished, can they still charge u with data plan?
well the contract is basically just to make sure that you don't go and cancel your plan after buying the phone. after 2 years your plan is still active but it just means that you have the ability to cancel plans and change to a new carrier.

the company has the right to charge you because after the contract is over, the prices given for the contract do not apply after the contract is cancelled so if the price was cheaper during the contract they can charge you more after
