What are some benefits of getting a smartphone if you don't want to pay for data plan?

I am interested in getting a Palm Centro from ATT. I have never had a smartphone so I'm not interested in a lot of fancy details. I really just want it for the scheduling calendar and QWERTY keyboard. I would like a phone with wifi but just can't stomach how much those cost. Does anyone else out there use a smartphone without the data plan and is it worth it? Thanks!What are some benefits of getting a smartphone if you don't want to pay for data plan?
